TamilNadu Govt under Dr.Kalaignar Karunanithi patronized the song “"Neeraadum kadaludtha" written by “ManonManeeyam” Sundaranar in honor of “Mother Tamil”. To set the song to tune, Music Director M.S. Viswanathan (MSV) was approached who offered a choice of 21 tunes. Incidentally, the first tune that was composed, was chosen by Dr. Kalaignar Karunanithi. The song eventually rendered by the composer MSV's favourite pair TMS and P. Susheela, is a part and parcel of a Tamil's heart beat. Needless to say, any State Government function or any important function in Schools is deemed incomplete without this song setting the "Tamil" tone for the proceedings. | |

This song requires a special mention as it reflects “Unity in diversity” concept of India . It is from "Silappathikaaram", one of the oldest surviving tamil literatures till date. “Silappathikaaram” and “kANalvari” are the beginnings of what we consider as the early Tamil Isai (the roots of Carnatic music). The exact date of Silampu is not known but is considered somewhere between 400-700 AD. The work has 6 chapters on music: aRangetRukAthai, kaNalvari, vEnirkAthai, vEttuvavari, kunRakuRavai and aychiyarkuRavai. It also talks extensively about instruments, song structures, meters, stage dimensions and settings. There is no other Indian work that is so descriptive in music and dance which was portrayed during those times. . Illango adikaL also used kalippA extensively and very imaginatively. KalippA (with its tharvu, koccakam, thaazicai...) is what metamorphosed into the classical raaga structure. A song from this old tamil literature was composed by a bengali "Salil Chaudry", directed by a malayalee "ramu kariyath" and sung by a telugite "P.Susheela". |
Movie: dhwani (malayalam) |
This song underlines the fact that art indeed transcends barriers as here, a Muslim from Lucknow set to tune, a Hindu Devotional song penned by Yusuf Ali Kecheri, a Muslim himself, hailing from the South. The song was feelingly rendered by a Hindu P. Susheela and a Christian KJ Yesudas. The song belongs to the movie "Dhwani" and marked Naushad Ali's probably the first foray into Malayalam movies and a long overdue reunion with P. Susheela , post the Tamil version of Mughal-E-Azam. Interestingly, the impetus for the reunion was provided by Naushad Ali himself through his dogged insistence of wanting P. Susheela to croon his well sculpted tune |
