The reason will be understood if you know the movie
situation. Gemini Ganesan and Savithri are lovers. GG gets caught
with a street boy due to some reason. The boy refuses to leave GG
and goes behind GG everywhere calling him as 'Dad'. GG cannot take
the street boy to his home because his parents may question him
on who the boy is. So he leaves the boy in Savithri's house asking
her to take care of the boy for a night. The song comes when she
has trouble making the boy sleep. At the beginning of the song the
boy shouts out GG's movie name as his dad's name when PS sings 'thandhai
yaarO' (I wonder who is this boy's dad!)
Who can forget Daisy Irani and the refrain
'mahAganam porundhiya
SreemAn Sundararajan' (GG's name in the film!)
Actually, this song alone was composed by T Chalapathi
Rao, though the remaining songs were by S Dakshinamoorthi.
