sollaththaan ninaikkiREn mudiyavillai

(Movie: engaL selvi; MD: KVM)

Background of the song:

The movie starts with Anjali Devi and Nageswara Rao as a couple who had a love marriage and have a one year old daughter. NR is a lawyer who is always engrossed in work and doesn't spend any time with AD, who, like any normal house-wife, is vexed about that.
She keeps reminding him about the need for him to spend a reasonable amount of time for her and the family, but he doesn't seem to listen. One day he promises that he will return from office at 6 pm and take her out for a movie. As expected, it doesn't happen and he comes at 10 pm. AD, who is waiting for him without even eating, gets more annoyed when he says he has already eaten outside. Then he argues that he is working hard to earn all the big money for the family and further, goes on to say some jokes to get her back to normalcy. Then they start discussing about their baby's naming ceremony which they had planned to conduct that week. NR asks AD what song she is planning to sing at that function.. and whether he can get a preview of that song.. and AD starts singing this song.

sollaththaan ninaikkiREn mudiyavillai
[I want to say this thing (to him) but cannot!]

adhai sonnAlum kEtpavarkku..

[Even if I tell it, the person who listens..]

At this point she stops and looks at NR (who doesn't seem to understand why she stopped). She smiles, thinking to herself that he'll never understand.. (I am reminded here of Ambika calling Bhagyaraj as vAththu.) Then she continues...

adhai sonnAlum kEtpavarkku puriyavillai
[Even if I tell it, the person who listens won't understand]

The lines

indru varum nALai varum sendrAlum thirumbi varum selvam
[Wealth will always come today or tomorrow and it will even come back if it goes away]

iLamai sendru mudhumai vandhAl kAdhalisai pAdAdhu uLLam
[(But,) if youth goes and old age comes, the mind will not sing romantic tunes any more]

idhai sollaththAn ninaikkiREn mudiyavillai
[This is what I am trying to convey to him, but cannot]
adhai sonnAlum kEtpavarkku puriyavillai
[Even if I tell it, the person who listens won't understand]

Then the lines

kadaRkaraiyil piRandhu vandha uRavumillaiyO - munbu
kAdhal sonna kadhaigaLellAm ninaivumillaiyO

[Don't you remember our love relationship that blossomed in the beach
and the romantic talks that you told me then?]

AD is at the piano when she sings this. She continues singing while playing the piano..

pattam petra pinbum paadam mudiyavillaiyO
[Even after getting your degree you seem to be in the learning mode]

She repeats the line, looks back, but NR is missing! She looks around. He has already lost
interest in the song, has gone to his desk in a far off part of the room and is reading a law book!

AD gets emotional at this point and sings the last line with a sob..

paadi varum, kuyilin nenjam, theriyavillaiyO
[Can't you see the mind of
this singing bird?]

Wonderful song! By the way, this is the only song penned by Kannadhasan for the movie. The
movie has other good songs:

2. vaaraayO, vaaraayO (beautiful lullaby sung by PS.. there are 2 versions in the movie)
3. sila sila aaNdugaL munnam (excellent sad song by P Leela)
4. unnai nambi avaL irundhaaL (sad PBS song)
5. ambuli maamaa (MSR)
