kalyANap pandhal alangaaram

from thattungaL thiRakkappadum (MD: MSV)

This song is incredibly high-pitched. PS scales, with euphonic ease, those Himalayan heights set by the exacting MSV.

Thattungal Thirakkappadum-1966, was a wonderful whodunit, the likes of which Tamil film history has seldom seen. Unfortunately for Chandrababu, our people didn’t take to it, and his door went unknocked. It starred besides him, his companion of those days, Nadigayar thilakam Savithri. It is rumoured that both of them, being bitterly disappointed in their respective personal lives, found solace in the bottle and in each other’s company. The film also had KR Vijaya- a spellbindlingly slim and beautiful KRV- who appeared only in modern clothes throughout the film, and RS Manohar playing the unscrupulous villain.

JPC’s Kannmani Papa was full of fun and frolic, while PS’s another solo-Oor paadum thaalaatu unakkum enakkum porundhaadhu is a haunting number.

Kalyana pandhal alankaram
Kai thottu maalai thandha neram
Uyir konda ennangal
Suvai konda kannangal
Marupadi malarndhadhamaa

The opening Shehnai notes bestow upon the song the prescribed moody opening and PS commences her soiree in a breathlessly high pitch, that gently descends with each line, only climb up again with the last line the ‘amma’ echoing twice and then caressingly fading—

Uravenna-
Poraadum pirivenna
Sugamenna
Thaniyaana thuyarenna
Sollavo nenjame andha naal konjamo
Indha naal vandhadhum thandhadhum konjamo

Malarkkondu
Manjalin niram kondu
Kalai kondu
Kungumachilaikkondu
Deivame vandhadhe indha naal mangalam
Kanniyin nenjiley mannavan sangamam

The lyrics may not be correct- but you get the essence of the song. It is a wretched rule in Tamil films that songs of films that sink without a trace are generally ruthlessly ignored- and this wonderful number went unnoticed. It is our loss.

Regarding the situation for 'Kalyaana pandhal alangaram', its like this :

Manohar and Savithiri are married and have a kid. But Manohar is that irresponsible kind and he often ignores the family due to this 'underworld' links and other such illegal activities. The family is in a turmoil. After some time, Monohar claims he has turned a new leaf and that he would be committed to his family. Thatz when they go out on a trip or something and this song is set on a mountain range.

You could make out from Savithiri's face the amount of grief and sorrow she had in her personal life - the charming, expressive face isnt seen here!
