The Telugu Vignana Samithi has resolved to institute an award
in honour of famous singer P Susheela.
Announcing this at the Golden Jubilee celebrations, former
speaker Ramesh Kumar, who is also the chief patron of the Samithi),
said the P Susheela Award will be given annually to best budding
artiste (female singer) from next year.
The announcement came in the backdrop of Susheela’s statement
that no one had bothered to institute an award in her name though
her songs were quite popular. “Singers are a nation’s
treasure. In 50 years of my singing career, not much has been
done to institute an award in my name. Normally, awards are
conferred/instituted after a person dies, but of what use is
such recognition for the person after death ?” she had
questioned.
