Eminent playback singer Smt.P.Susheela is selected
for the prestigious Raghupathy Venkayya Award for 2002. The award
function will be on 18th February 2004.
P.Susheela was born in 1935 in vijayanagaram. Her father Mukundarao is a noted
lawyer at that time. Her mother Sheshawataram is a house wife. Seeing her interest
in music her father encouraged her to learn music, she got her diploma in music
from the music school where great Dwaram Venkataswamy Naidu is the principal.
To complete her graduation in music she came to Madras.
She joined in Sangeeta Academy under the guidance of Subramani
iyer and completed her Graduation in Music. After completion she
joined in All India Radio and gave
many performances there.
In 1952 Pendyala Nageshwara Rao garu gave her first
break in the film “Kannatalli” (petra
thai in Tamil). She sang her first song with A.M.Raja, She was then an
employee of the AVM Studios, receiving a fixed amount as her monthly
salary, for several
years after her introduction in Kannatalli. Meyyappa Chettiar, the demanding
perfectionist that he was, appointed a Tamil teacher for Susheela to train
her in proper pronunciation of wordsShe almost 25 thousand songs in all
south Indian
languages. She attributes her success to her husband mohan rao who encouraged
her a lot. She has equal name and fame in Tamil along with Telugu.
Susheela
was awarded five times national Award (1969- uyaru manidan,
1971 savale samali, 1977 – sirisiri muvva, 1982 – Meghasandesam,
1983 – M.L.A
Edukondalu) and five times from Tamilnadu state award. during the Indo-Pakistan
war she entertained the jawans at the war front. The Government of Tamil
Nadu has honoured her with the title of ``Kalaimamani`` and again in
the year 1991
she won the Tamil Nadu State Government Award as best playback artiste
for 1990-91. In August 1992 Susheela was conferred the honourary Doctorate
at Washington,
U.S. by the North American Alumni Association.
