As today is “HOLI”, my memory
goes back…... This is a coincidence that I was cleaning my
cup-board and found the record of the programme that I attended
on the HOLI-day of 1987.
I was in Mumbai and enjoyed the special light music programme organized
by Mumbai Tamils in ShaNmugananda hall. It was sad that in 1988,
the Hall had a major fire accident.
Coming back the Light music programme…. The orchestra was
headed by the legend K V Mahadevan with a great support from Pugazhendi.
There were only 3 singers. You know who were they? The history creators
TMS, P. Susheela and Late Seergazhi Govindarajan. Only these 3 singers.
It was a terrible experience to get the tickets even in the Black
maket. We got the Rs 30/- ticket for Rs 100/- in 1987 !!!. Of curse
it was a complete entertainment.
Each singer, one by one, gave 3 songs continuously.
TMS Started with
- Agara mudala ezhuthellam ariya vaithaai Devi
- Kalviyaa selvamaa veeramaa
- Katti thangam vetti eduthu
PS followed with
- Gangai karai thottam
- Ennadhaan ragasiyamO
- Thookkanag-kuruvi koodu (Kaviyarasar was remembered before start
of this song by KVM and Pugazh)
Seegazhiyaar sung the following
- Arupadai veedu konda thiru muruga (SG did not refer to his diary
at all; he just remembered the complete song…. A classic show
by SG)
- Kallilay kalai vaNNam kandaan
- Mattu kaara vela en maata(i) konjam paathukoda (the “Bull”ing
sound was classic J; makkaLukku oray kushi)
Then solos and duets were sung by the trio
- KadavuL Manidhanaha pirakka vendum (KVM was so emotional during
this song)
- Edho Edho Edho oru mayakkam (PS was in very good mood and showed
lots of light gestures)
- Kalai magaL Kai poru-Le
- Amudhum thenum edharkku
With the above Amudhu, it was Interval….A small felicitation
function to garland ponnadai and maalai for KVM, Pugazh, TMS, SG
and PS.
2nd half started with 5 songs by PS at a stretch
- Nalandhanaa (The “peepee” vaadiya kaarar did not
start correctly; Pugazhendi was bit upset and PS said with smile
that we can take next song; but Pugazh did not listen to her and
insisted that the “peepee” should do good and encouraged
him to start the song. The dance jathis were rendered by Pugazh
and it was a superb show though there was a a starting trouble)
- Mannavan Vandhanadi (No disturbance at all in between… the
lengthy song was sung with lots of devotion by PS, with a great
accompaniment by Pugazh on the Jathis. Obviously at the end, junta
did not leave PS to go to next song and she had to repeat the song
from “Thooviya poovinil menigaL aadida”. A great treat)
- Neela chelai katti konda samuthira poNNu (KVM said that it was
his fav song)
- Gnayiru enbadhu KaNNaga
- Oray murai dhaan unnodu pesi parthen nee oru thani piravi
- Yarukkaga idhu yaarukkaga (KVM hold TMS hand at the end of the
song with lots of emotion on his face)
- Un KaNNil Neer vazhindhaal
- Inbam engey by SG (I don’t know why KVM selected this song,
as it was so average)
- Engirundo vandhaan (Classic rendering by Seergaiyaar)
- Ennai vittu Odi poga mudiyumaa (Only one duet by SG and PS; SG
said that PS was the isaikuyil who sung max no.of duets with him)
- Unnai kaanaadha kaNNum kaNNalla (PS was asked to sing the third
charanam also by KVM which starts with “en maniyil unnai piLLaiyai
polay” and enjoyed the lines with his head nodding J)
- AvaLaa sonnaL irukkadhu (“selvam” song; too much of
body language shown by TMS; he simply acted on the stage)
- Paatum naaney bhavamum naaney (TMS did some mistakes in between
the swaras for which he got a starring look from KVM; I guess KVM
was very strict with even seniors like TMS)
- Nadayaa idhu nadayaa oru naadagam ingay nadakkudhu
- Aandukku aandu thedhikki thedhi (SG’s last song)
- Padhinaaru vayadhinilay padhinezhu piLLaigaLaam (what a sweet
song)
- Medhuvaa medhuvaa thodalaama (PS was very reluctant when she started
this song)
- Paalakaattu pakkathiley oru appavi raja
The programme ended with clabbing of all musicians as part of “paalakaatu” song.
KVM did not speak anything but just wished all Tamils of Mumbai.
Pugazh was with full of tears and said emotionally that he will
remember this programme till his end… It is true… how
can I too forget this. I still maintain that “notes” of
the programme, may be I will share in the coming years !!!
