Few days before, I had the great opportunity
for me to watch the devotional maga hit movie “Adhi parasakthi” directed
by KS Gopalakrishnan. Everything was great.... episodes selection,
screenplay, dialogues, "Deva loga” thandira katchigaL,
artists selection, and of course music. A great treat of 10 songs
by KV Mahadevan. Though this thread is for “PS”, I just
chose to share my views of the songs of this film, which includes
3 songs of PS too!!
Abirama bhattar episode:
------------------------
Stars: SV Subbaiah, S Varalakshmi
“Om om om Adhi parasakthi” by TMS. The film opens with
this song with the “gaNNeer" kural of TMS. May be that
induces the “bakthi paravasm” right from the beginning.
“Solladi Abhirami” by TMS. Voice of TMS and action
of SV Subbaiah were in good sync to make this song a major hit;
this was one of the often-sung song in competitions. TMS showed
kovam, bakthi, aacharyam, magizhchi etc in the same song. KVM would
have blindly chosen TMS only for this versatile expressive voice.
Kumara guruparar story:
-----------------------
Stars: Baby Rani, Master who acted as Kumara Gubarar(??), Baby Sridevi,
Jayalalitha, TK Bhagavathy
“Thaaipaal koduthaaL parasakthi (Thandhaikku mandhirathai” by
Radha (Jayalakshmi). An elderly classical singer sang for a child
artist; KVM could have gone to MS Rajeswari or engaged a senior
singer to change her voice and sing. He had the 'guts' to use Radha.
That too, she sung in her own normal soft voice. May be, Radha did
not have the 'gimmicks' power to change her voice for a child artist
to claim that she is "versatile". In my view, a Singer
should be capable of singing different styles/types of songs in
different languages with any kind of bhavam in his/her voice in
any scales; not just changing voice; if this is required, even an
mimicry expert could fill the bill, right? Here in this song, Radha,
with clarity in her diction and apt expression, had done a great
job; may be this is the best song in this film?
“Venduvadheelam edhu - NallavargaL aatchi dhanil” by
Radha (Jayalakshmi). KeLvi-Badhil type of songs with different tune/mettu
for "venduvadhellam", "parapaadhu edhu", "Nadappadhu
edhu"… you enjoy this song without missing even a single
answer.
Sumban, Visumban story:
-----------------------
Stars: Muthuraman, V.Nirmala, OAK Devar, A.Karunanidhi, Vanishree.
No lyrics but only “Thillaana jathi” by Soolamangalam
Rajalakshmi. The dance by Nirmala was so so. Though it was thillana,
many styles were with very mediocre steps. I am able comment as
I have the learning on classical dance :-)) But Sool.Rajalakshmi
rendering the jathis was on-par with a perfect "nattuvaangam" expert.
Not even a single slip; great jathis !!
“Azhgagha KaNNukku” by S Janaki. I would rate this
as the least liked song of this film. This is for VaNishree who "mayikki-fise" the
asuras; should be a "kiranga" vaikkum song with much seductive
lyrics. I wonder the same SJ who sung "nethu rathiri yamma", "Ponmeni
urugudhe" etc later, had rendered this "azhghaga" in
so monotonous voice without the basic "jeeven" for a seductive
number. Thanks to IR, who had brought much more depth and variety
of expressions in her voice in late 70's & 80’s movies!!!
Col.Peter story :
-----------------
Stars: Major, Padmini, G. Sakunthala, V. Gopalakrishnan, and Ragini
“Aayee mahamaayee” by P. Susheela. Pakka mariamman
song, introducing Padmini with Theechatti in her hand. I did not
hear PS voice, but it looked as if Padmini had sung herself; such
a great sync.
“Naanatchi seidhu varum” by P. Susheela. KSG should
have been very bold to start next song within 5 mins of the previous
one. ""Naanatchi"" commences in next few mins
after ""Aayee"". Different roopam's of Adhi
parasakthi like Meenakshi, Visalakshi, Kamakshi and finally Mariamman
(with black make-up, a great work), were shown in that song. I guess
2 different ragas were used in this, with PS's anaayasa kural !!
Fisherman story:
----------------
Stars: Surulirajan, Magic Radhika, MN Nambiar, S. Varalakshmi
“Aathadi maariyamma” by Seergazhi Govindarajan. This
is a typical taapaanguthu kind, but attracted many fans, as this
song is different among the traditional classical/semi-classical
stuff in this movie; Old is gold… and SG is SG!!
Siva-DakshyaNi story:
---------------------
Stars: Gemini ganesan, Jayalalitha, Kambar Jayaraman
“Varugave varugavey” by P. Susheela for JJ. Another
major hit; this is at the climax. DakshayaNi invites Lord Shiva
to come to the earth and marry her. Very difficult wordings in the
lyrics with a burst of her anger against her father Dakshan. The
same angry expressions were very well demonstrated by PS. Song's
end is with the play of mrudhangam and damaru one after another..
Unforgettable song by KVM
Watched, listened and enjoyed.. any comments from you friends please….?
